The following is my response to an email from a disabled person in a small town who tries to work to bring in sufficient funds despite pain, has medical bills he/she can't pay, and eats one and occasionally two meals a day. This person shares my opinion expressed below. I realize that it is not the type of article I usually post on this site, but this subject has been on my mind more and more this year, and I want readers to have my thoughts on the subject.
Remember when most people getting government assistance were all lumped together as on "welfare," and the stereotypical image was black women with multiple babies? Then when masses of illegal immigrants from points south entered the picture and added to the "welfare" mix? I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS MY VIEW! I wrote this as an introduction.
Well, now, it is obvious to more and more people, thanks to Facebook and other internet forums and the media, that the old picture doesn't "hold true." For several years now, media has been reporting that more and more of the "white Anglo-Saxon Protestant" group are in need of assistance--people whose ancestors came to this country in the 1600s, 1700s, 1800s.
So more people than ever before are aware of the needs of people "like themselves" who are in need--food, medical care, housing, etc. It is impossible to avoid if one watches television news regularly or gets on the Internet. It seems that the number of people in need is increasing--not just that we're more aware of it because of the media and the internet. I'm reminded of the time of the Great Depression. However, during that time, many more people lived on small farms and were at least able to grow some food and maybe even keep a cow to for milk to drink and make butter and to hire themselves out to neighbors who had bigger farms and needed the extra hands. They got paid in watermelons, sweet potatoes, meat, etc. Those types of options are almost non-existent today.
Thanks to the media and internet, more people are aware of the needy in this day and age. More people are realizing that "there for the grace of God go I." More and more people are stepping up to the plate and giving to help those in need. Unfortunately, it's not enough. Taxes people pay are going out of the country to make war. Tax breaks are given to corporations who out-source their operations while there is massive unemployment in the USA. Special visas are given to citizens of other countries who come to the USA and earn less at a job than the companies who hire them would pay citizens. The citizens of the USA need those jobs! And it is the people, not the corporations, who are paying the bulk of the taxes.
It is one thing to assist countries and their peoples in times of tragedy. It is quite another thing to engage in warfare for years at a time in countries who have not directly attacked our shores (as in Pearl Harbor which took the USA into World War II), spending millions and billions of taxpayers' money. Wars have been going on in the Middle East for thousands of years and will, no doubt, continue despite interventions of the USA.
Yes, there are citizens who look down upon those in need and even show contempt in their thoughts, words, and actions--far too many. There are people who say, "It's their karma." There are people who say, "They attracted or created this situation." And they ignore and walk away. However, the biggest offenders seem to be those who make up federal government. I cannot comprehend how any senator or representative in her/his right mind can vote to increase spending abroad and cut domestic programs or fail to create them when there is so much need here in the USA. They claim people in their home states elected them to do just that. Surely not! Surely there are enough kind, goodhearted, service-oriented people to elect a representative who will say, "Enough is enough! There are too many hungry people lacking medical care, too many jobless and homeless people in this world. Let's focus on the wellbeing of our citizens first!" Obviously, I'm wrong. If there were enough concerned people, we'd all be electing people who represent our wishes--not the wishes of people who are of the opinion, "Let them eat cake!" (That phrase is attributed to Marie Antoinette, who became Queen of France when her husband, Louis XVI ascended to the throne in May 1774. She had no compassion or sympathy for commoners. They were overthrown and executed after about eighteen years.)
Some people claim citizens shouldn't depend on the government to take care of them. Well, when the bulk of taxes to support our federal and state governments are coming from the citizenry, then the citizenry has a right to expect to be supported by our government. That's a no-brainer! Instead, the citizens are being neglected and taxpayers are being exploited to support wars and unnecessary programs.
My recommendations? Well, for starters, the USA can stop giving tax breaks to corporations who are outsourcing jobs that are much needed in this country. And then pull resources out of Afghanistan and Iraq and bring the troops home. Why spend so much of taxpayer funds exploring space? Seems to me that the federal government needs to focus on basic safety and survival needs for all citizens as a #1 priority. Everything is upside down, and it is shameful!
There! I've "said my piece."
