During a telephone consultation today with a person who has been going through a rough patch and has been reacting with anger and expressing it outwardly, he/she brought up the subject of our shadow selves (aka dark side) and stated that expressing one’s anger is healthy.  I disagreed, informing him/her that expressing anger violently and attacking others (with words or physically) is destructive and harmful.

For background, here’s what Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, www.wikipedia.org has to say about our shadow selves/aspects aka dark side in its summary of the subject.  (Much more information is available below the summary.)

In Jungian psychology, the shadow or "shadow aspect" may refer to (1) the entirety of the unconscious, i.e., everything of which a person is not fully conscious, or (2) an unconscious aspect of the personality which the conscious ego does not identify in itself. Because one tends to reject or remain ignorant of the least desirable aspects of one's personality, the shadow is largely negative. There are, however, positive aspects which may also remain hidden in one's shadow (especially in people with low self-esteem).[1] Contrary to a Freudian definition of shadow, therefore, the Jungian shadow can include everything outside the light of consciousness, and may be positive or negative. "Everyone carries a shadow," Jung wrote, "and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is."[2] It may be (in part) one's link to more primitive animal instincts,[3] which are superseded during early childhood by the conscious mind. According to Jung, the shadow, in being instinctive and irrational, is prone to psychological projection, in which a perceived personal inferiority is recognised as a perceived moral deficiency in someone else. Jung writes that if these projections remain hidden, "The projection-making factor (the Shadow archetype) then has a free hand and can realize its object--if it has one--or bring about some other situation characteristic of its power." [4] These projections insulate and harm individuals by acting as a constantly thickening veil of illusion between the ego and the real world. From one perspective, 'the shadow...is roughly equivalent to the whole of the Freudian unconscious';[5] and Jung himself asserted that 'the result of the Freudian method of elucidation is a minute elaboration of man's shadow-side unexampled in any previous age'.[6] Jung also believed that "in spite of its function as a reservoir for human darkness—or perhaps because of this—the shadow is the seat of creativity.";[7] so that for some, it may be, 'the dark side of his being, his sinister shadow...represents the true spirit of life as against the arid scholar'.[8]

We told him/her to nurture his/her shadow—not to feed his/her shadow.  These have different outcomes.  One decreases the shadow and the other increases the shadow. One is positive and loving. One is negative and destructive. Reacting in anger is just as harmful to the person expressing the anger as to the person at whom it is directed—and often moreso.

I recommended neutralizing all that anger he/she has been creating and expressing recently. The following is recommended to people who are negative and frustrated and angry people on a daily basis—until one can be sincere and from the heart with it.  In fact, I use it for maintenance—just in case.

I Am [your name]. I Am That I Am. I Am The Divine I Am. I Am the I Am That I Am.  I Am a fully sentient, sovereign, free-willed entity. I declare my sovereign free will now. I Am the Divine in control. I Am the only authority in my life. I Am Divinely protected by the light of my being and the light of Christ—Christ in me the hope of glory.  I Am [your name]. I Am That I Am. In the name of the Christ, with the Power of Christ Divine within me, with my Applied Conscious Intent, and with the power of my Divine I Am, I [your name] decree I Am neutralizing and diffusing all negative and unloving thoughts and emotions and imaginings that me and mine have been and are creating, cultivating, attracting, and carrying, and voiding and negating their effects--throughout space-time-- throughout time-space—on a full and permanent basis—now.

It can have a very calming effect if one keeps repeating it over and over again when extremely angry and an uplifting effect when one is feeling depressed and negative. For repeating it in one session, after first speaking the preceding paragraph in full once, one can leave off the first part before “in the name of Christ.”
