When reading in one of Dr. Joshua David Stone's books recently, found words to add to my collection of quotes: "Being of service is an attitude." I realize others have made the same point, but I'll give him the credit for this one. (FYI: Dr. Stone has authored Soul Psychology and several books on ascension.) What these words mean is that no matter what the activity, one can make it service with one's attitude toward it, one's intent, one's feelings about it, etc. What people usually think of when discussing service is service to others (STO), selfless service. However, one can be serving one's self (service to self, STS), selfish service.
We would suggest that there are benefits for one's self when serving others. For example, the other day we discovered a man emptying abandoned storage units--discarding it in the facility's big dumpster, which is emptied by an automatic garbage disposal truck once a week. He placed what wouldn't fit near the dumpster, but not so near as to obstruct the garbage truck.
Went to work immediately in an attempt to salvage as many of the lighter-weight items as possible. Worked for several hours as the man brought out more and more things--including large appliances and furniture. Filled some small containers with goodies and ten or more 30-gallon garbage bags with clothes (including some unworn with tags on and some name brand). Made two trips to a charity several miles away that day and one trip the next day. Was very tired and bruised and scratched when I called it quits that first day, but felt so much joy. Body was weary, but spirit was soaring. This is an example of how service to others can benefit one's self. I really needed that experience. Too bad so many useful items went to the garbage dump. As usual, I have to keep reminding that I can't save the world, that the best I can do is the best I can do. While salvaging that day, couldn't help thinking that if I had a large conversion van (that I've wanted for about twenty years now), I would have been able to save so much more. Even a big pickup truck would have been better than my four-door sedan. I am grateful for the current Lightmobile, but it limits me in several ways--including how many useful items I can haul and give to the needy.
The "traveling angel" wanted the van to live out of and to keep gifts for the needy--used coats and blankets, food and beverages, toiletries, and miscellaneous items received free or purchased at low cost. (And I make a point where I see a need, especially of a homeless or near-homeless person, to try to fill it--what I call my "Jesus Work"). Purchased a good blanket for only $2.00 at a yard sale (of miscellaneous items) today. As I drove away, I thought of the van I almost took possession of last year, how much easier my life would be with a big conversion van, and, to my surprise, burst into tears. Serenity prayer, Angel-Light. Serenity prayer. It goes: "God give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." One reason I grieve for the van is that I've given up after several "almosts" over twenty years and one "lemon" that I drove less than a month. I have no hope there will be a van, and if I grieve from time to time, like today, that's okay.
