Years ago, we created this basic handout that combines the subjects of relaxation and passive meditation, mostly because relaxation usually accompanies standard passive meditation. The reader can choose to end with the relaxation time when it feels right and not go further. However, sometimes relaxation flows right into meditation—especially over time.  (Prayer is talking; meditation is listening, generally.)

Place yourself in a comfortable seated or reclining position.  Close your eyes, while taking a few deep breaths, slowly and deeply, in through the nose and out through the mouth with the intent to relax.  You might affirm silently and slowly, “I Am relaxing my body, my mind, and my spirit—now.”  If you aren’t already in the practice of breathing deeply or “full body,” think of your abdomen as a balloon you’re inflating. You artificially fill your balloon by pushing breath down into that area and then artificially pull the abdomen back in for a while when exhaling.  Counting to 4 on each inhale, then holding for another count of 4, then releasing to a count of 4 can be helpful.  Gradually, cease the counting and just allow your body to breathe deeply. With practice over time, this breathing will come automatically to you—24 hours a day.  At some point in time (maybe after days or weeks of practice), you will want to expand the area breathing to the entire trunk of your body.

After you have practiced the above several times on different days, you can begin instructing yourself to relax by communicating silently while deep breathing.  The words used are divided by a hyphen—one syllable or one word when inhaling and one syllable or one word when exhaling. Don’t be concerned if you don’t remember them all.  They don’t have to be in any particular order either. The recommended words are At – Ease; Quiet – Mind; Re – lax; Here – Now; Peace – Calm; Be – Still; Si – lence.

If you wish to go to sleep, you can add these words:  Sleep-y; Deep – Sleep. You can also substitute numbers for words, when easing into sleep.  Count backward silently—one number when inhaling and one when exhaling, with the last being zero. Start with any number you wish. For example, if 100 seems overwhelming, try 20 the first time.  Just find what works well for you at any given time.

When beginning to practice passive meditation, some people are concerned and stressed, wondering if they’ll be able to do it or do it right.  First, there is no “right way.”  What works for you is just fine. An important reminder here is that, just like anything else, for most people, practice makes meditation easier over time.  Ignore any thoughts that come into your mind and silently think “Quiet – Mind” as many times as it takes.  No struggling allowed, just relax and be at peace.  Yes, you can. Yes, you can. Yes, you can.

Here’s something I picked up somewhere that can be used before beginning relaxation and passive meditation.  Imagine a bright golden white light at the core of your body, generally just above the solar plexus area. Take deep breaths and expanding the light outward to fill your entire body as you’re exhaling. The goal is to fill and encase your physical body and auric body in the golden white light. Extend the light about 3’ to 5’ beyond your physical form.  When that feels complete, allow yourself to sense that field of light in place.  It is of high vibration and protective of your space.

Obviously, there are many other techniques for relaxing and engaging in passive meditation.  The described practices have proven effective (again, with practice).

One doesn’t have to know if there are any reversed polarities and other glitches in one’s electromagnetic body before doing processes that address such issues.  I consider it insurance. I’ve had the two procedures in my collection for many years and do them several days a week.  It doesn't take long, so why not cover one's bases, so to speak?

Process #1:  Stand with arms by the sides and feet 6" to 1' apart.  Position your tongue behind the ridge behind the front teeth, in the middle.  Cup your hands separately with fingers together.  Rub the mastoid bones behind your ears (feels like a bony bump) vigorously with the fingertips, exerting 3-5 pounds of pressure for 30-60 seconds. Place the fingers of one hand over the naval, using 3-5 pounds of pressure, massage the navel area in a circular motion in both directions.  At the same time, with the other hand, find the "v" of the bones below your neck (the soft spot between the bones).  With thumb and forefinger, move out and down until you find the corner indentations beneath and to the outside of the bones where they make about a 90 degree angle.  Gently move your fingers in a circular motion while pressing firmly—about 3-5 pounds of pressure.  Face the palm of your dominant hand flat and toward your crotch--about 2" - 3" away.  Move the hand up almost to the chin, then back down to the crotch at a quick, even pace.  Do this 5X - 10X.  Then repeat except go beyond the chin almost to the tip of the nose, and then move your hand out with the palm up, as if you are flinging something off. Bring hand down from that point the natural way it moves (out and back in).  Do this 5X - 10X.  Lift your right knee and tap it with your left hand. Lift your left knee and tap it with the right hand. Alternate and repeat 5X - 10X.

Process #2:  Either stand up or lie flat, with hands at your sides and legs slightly separated.  Take a few deep breaths to relax.  Hold your two hands over your head, three to five inches above your body. The fingers of your hands should be pointing toward the top of your head.  Beginning at the top of your head, cross and uncross your arms—palms toward your body—in a side-to-side sweeping motion, moving down toward your feet.  When you get to the point that you can no longer keep your hands positioned correctly with fingers pointing toward your head, turn your hands so the fingertips are toward your feet and continue on to just beyond your feet.  You will have to sit up in order to move your hands over the lower part of your body. This is done the entire length of your body a total of four times—twice with one hand closer to your body and the other hand crossing over above it, and then with the position of the hands switched.  Don’t move overly slow or fast. Also, it is better to overlap than to skip an area. There is no need to strive for perfection when engaging in this activity.
