While eating recently, I remembered the "fantasy dinner guest game." I thought about people I would invite to a special dinner because I admire them and what they achieved during their lives.

There's Jesus Christ. (Did you know that Christ/Cristos is a title meaning "anointed one"?) My favorite teachings of Jesus are in "The Sermon on the Mount" (Matthew 5, 6, 7). I also take very much to heart Matthew 25: 34-36, 40: ". . . , Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; Naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. . . . Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me." (Gideon Bible)

I would invite Peace Pilgrim, who changed her name, left her belongings behind, and set out with nothing but the clothes on her back, a comb, and paper and pencil to walk the country for peace during the Korean War. Peace Pilgrim is a major role model for me. Her teachings have been published by an organization called "Friends of Peace Pilgrim." Some of my favorites are: (1) "When you become a channel through which God works, there are no more limitations, because God does the work through you. You are merely the instrument, and what God can do is unlimited." (2) "No one is truly free who is still attached to material things, or to places, or to people." (3) "People have had to make up for their spiritual impoverishment by accumulating material things. When spiritual blessings come, material things seem unimportant."

Another of my role models is Mother Teresa. What educated person isn't aware of the contributions Mother Teresa made in this world? So much love and compassion and actions on behalf of the suffering. Interesting thing happened at the time Princess Diana was killed in a car accident. When the world was focusing on Princess Diana, the name "Mother Teresa" came into my mind numerous times. I discovered what that meant when a week or two later, Mother Teresa quietly made her transition. It was only then that it was brought to my attention by the media that Princess Diana and Mother Teresa had actually spent time together and consulted on various projects. Questioning Divine Spirit, I learned there was a strong spiritual connection between the two.

What an honor and privilege to have the presence of Mahatma Gandhi at dinner! What this one man achieved is proof that nonviolence can achieve goals--despite those who know no other way and insist in engaging in violent activities.

And to actually be in the presence of Paramahansa Yogananda in this life (as I've been in another life), would be a special blessing. During the 1980s, I picked up a hardback book at a garage/rummage sale that did not have a paper cover: Autobiography of a Yogi. When I opened it up, my eyes met the eyes of Paramahansa Yogananda, and I exclaimed to myself, "I know this man!" Since that time, I've been privileged to meet and/or hear speak people who studied under Yogananda or his guru, and I recognized them as "old friends/acquaintances," too. Yogananda's teachings have been published around the world and Autobiography of a Yogi is considered a classic in the category of spiritual books. Yogananda said: "It is not easy to be spiritual, but it is very easy if you will only follow a few rules. Begin by simplifying your life. Then, remain somewhat apart from others. If you want to find God, don't mix too much socially. Seclusion is the price of greatness." In my opinion, a certain degree of spiritualization leads to this lifestyle automatically--without conscious effort. I've always considered games like card games a waste of time, so it was sweet to have that validated by Yogananda: "Never kill time. It is too valuable to waste on useless things. I never learned to play cards or checkers or any such thing because I saw they are just a means of killing time. Life is too precious to squander."

I realize that historians (and others) are on record describing Jimmy Carter as an ineffective (etc.) president, but many (including myself) admire him as a person and what he has achieved since his presidency. I'd invite Jimmy and Roslyn Carter (because they are very much a team).

Add Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, his wife. Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech enthralls me every time I hear portions of it, and I have the words in document form on disk. What a man possessed with a vision whose service to humanity will never be forgotten!

Now aren't I selfish? No friends, no family. Just these incredible people and me, myself, and I. I probably forgot some (maybe Molly Ivins, a liberal columnist of Texas; Wynton Marsalis (have a crush on him); Oprah Winfrey; Mark Twain; Anwar Sadat; Nelson Mandela; Jesse Jackson).

Just fantasizing.

LIBERAL QUOTES

LIBERAL QUOTES

I suppose it's lazy of me to peruse the new nonfiction additions to the library and neglect the shelves unless there's nothing new I want to read (and I read nonfiction 99.9% of the time). I smiled many times over the weekend when reading The Best Liberal Quotes Ever: Why the Left is Right by William Martin (Illinois: Source Books, 2004). The quotes are arranged in sections by categories and the pages are easy to read. I've chosen some of the quotes to add to my collection of favorites, and some of those I'm sharing in this blog.

Marianne Williamson: "Nothing liberates our greatness like the desire to help, the desire to serve."
Carl Jung: "The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases."

Martin Luther King, Jr.: "Everyone can be great because anyone can serve.... You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love."

Robert Ingersol: "The hands that help are better far than the lips that pray."

My favorite concerning relationships comes from Frederick E. Perl: "I do my thing, and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you are not in this world to live up to mine. If by chance we find each other, it's beautiful." (Those words have been quoted many times in books.)

The funniest quote in the book was: "If you remember the sixties, you weren't really there." Don't remember who said it, but I laughed out loud to read it.

My favorite quote in the book are words of William James: "We have grown literally afraid to be poor. We despise anyone who elects to be poor in order to simplify and save his inner life. If he does not join the general scramble and pant with the money-making street, we deem his spirit less and lacking in ambition." (I've been judged thusly more times than I really want to remember and no doubt it will continue to be the case as I go about my mission of service in this world.)

GOD-DROPPED THOUGHTS

GOD-DROPPED THOUGHTS

Once in the early 1980s at a garage/yard sale, I picked up a hard-backed book called, Autobiography of a Yogi. When I opened it, I found myself looking into the eyes of Paramahansa Yogananda and I recognized him (and that's a story for another blog). I purchased the book and still have it (packed away in the storage unit, along with most of my other books). Paramahansa Yogananda, who transitioned in the 1950s, was one of the first East Indians to bring Eastern religious thought to the United States. Yogananda, raised in the Hindu tradition, taught Christ Consciousness, and he included words of Jesus and others from The New Testament in his books and teachings. I identify very much with Yogananda's teachings. I've been blessed with having access to books of Yogananda's teachings in recent months. Read again and again, the truths Yogananda presented so simply renew and restore me. There are several organizations which attempt to carry on Yogananda's work in the United States, including the Ananda Centers. More information can be obtained by going to the following addresses on the web: www.ananda.org www.expandinglight.org

I recently read (again) the following words of Paramahansa Yogananda: "If you love God for His own self, not because of what He can give you, and if you are completely attracted by His divine magnetism, that power from Him goes out from your own heart and mind, and by your slightest little wish, you will attract unto yourself the fulfillment of that desire. If you have unconditional love for God, He drops thoughts in others' brains, and they become instruments to fulfill even your unspoken desires. So divine magnetism, by which you can attract anything unto yourself, is the kind of attractiveness you want to develop....."

I am so grateful when thoughts guiding others to support our ministry are dropped into other people's brains and they pay attention and take action as they are able.
