ONE FOR ALL AND ALL FOR ONE

In someone’s comment on Facebook recently were the words, "When we all
feel compassion for others, our society will start progressing again." My reaction? That's it in a nutshell! She hit
the nail on the head! The impasse between political parties in the USA comes to mind often
these days, and recently the phrase, “one for all and all for one” has come to
mind a few times. It seems to me that if
every citizen of the USA had that frame of mind and cared about the wellbeing
of everyone else, the impasse would never have happened, and this country would
be a better place to live.
I knew what the
phrase “one for all and all for one" means before I did an Internet search for
a well-worded definition, which I found: “ All the members of a group support
each of the individual members, and the individual members pledge to support
the group.” I wondered where the words “one for all and all for one ” originated. Various
sources claimed that the phrase originated from the Roman phrase "unus pro
omnibus, omnes pro uno” and revealed it is known as the motto of Alexandre
Dumas’ “Three Musketeers” and the unofficial motto of Switzerland since 1868 when
citizens united after widespread floods. (Switzerland first became a nation about
1848.) Politicians of all parties and regions accept “one for all and all for
one” as the motto of Switzerland.
So why can’t ALL
citizens of the USA feel compassion for ALL other citizens of the USA and work
together for the common good, supporting the health and wellbeing of everyone
else? ALL deserve to have safety and
survival needs met and opportunities to be productive according to their
abilities.
