Decades
ago, Joan Gattuso, a New Thought religious/spiritual teacher, created an
affirmation that has been spoken and written often. Based on the words of Emmet
Fox, a revered New Thought teacher of the first half of the 20th
century, it goes, “I Am poised and centered in Divine Mind, and nothing can
disturb the calm peace of my Soul."
I
think of and share those words often when people report to me they got into an
argument with someone or are angry at someone. I think of those words when
people stew in their anger and hate and unforgiveness and issue words vehemently
(which I don’t witness often in my presence, thank goodness). I think of those
words when the anger of some people sharing on social media is so strong it is
palpable. And I think of those words
when people who tend to get upset with other people claim this is their last
life on the planet, that they aren’t coming back to live any more lives. Oh, really? As long as your buttons are still
being pushed by others, then you can count on returning for another go-around
or two or more until you have ascended into higher consciousness and higher
love sufficiently that you don’t have negative reactions to others (with rare
exceptions).
Some
people claim that Jesus Christ got angry (when he drove the moneychangers out of
the temple). Maybe, maybe not. Myth, legend, or truth? There’s no way to know for sure. Even if he did, that’s the only example of
his anger given in The New Testament of The Holy Bible. And some professed Christians don’t believe
me when I remind them that St. Paul is alleged to have taught, “Let that mind [consciousness]
be in you which is also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5), which is something
to be strived for, in my opinion.
“I
Am poised and centered in Divine Mind, and nothing can disturb the calm peace
of my Soul.” Take a deep breath and
speak this affirmation and sense for yourself how beneficial it can be. Keep it
in your “tool kit” for those times when you feel off-center or irritated or
upset. “I Am poised and centered in Divine Mind, and nothing can disturb the
calm peace of my Soul.” Affirm these words
for maintenance on a daily basis.
And
practice lovingkindness. Turn the other cheek (Biblical). Give people the
benefit of a doubt. Look for an excuse for the unpleasant behavior and abusive
words of others. If all else fails, shake the dust off your feet (also Biblical)
and remove yourself from their presence or terminate the interaction--without
anger, but with such a love for your own self that you do not wish to expose
yourself to the negativity. Remember to
go within and reflect on any accusations and perceived attacks on your person
to ascertain whether or not there is something to be revealed and healed. And that brings us to another New Thought
affirmation, “Dear God, thank you for this evidence of thy love for me. By this
means do I grow.”
Resist
the temptation to take the angry words of others personally. After all, they
are often about that person’s own issues, as your anger is often about your own
issues. Hold no anger in your heart.
When it arises, let it pass through like birds in the wind. Again, “I Am poised and centered in Divine
Mind, and nothing can disturb the calm peace of my Soul.” And, “I Am ascending into higher
consciousness. I Am ascending into higher love.”
