A friend and supporter emailed me that she and her husband were shopping in a grocery store yesterday, the day before Easter Sunday, when a woman asked them if they would give her some money to buy food to make dinner for her grandchildren. She had a shopping list. They told her to buy whatever she wanted and they would pay for it, which they did. They are not wealthy people, but they asked her if she had any Easter candy for her grandchildren, and she didn't. They asked her to wait there while they went to a dollar general store nearby. They purchased candy and even some toys and took them back to the lady.
My kind of people! "Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn thou not away" (Matthew 5:42 KJV). What would you have done? I couldn't have done as much as they did (because of financial constraints), but I would have done something.
On the other hand, recently when I was walking back from Walmart, with groceries, etc. on my walker, I noticed a young man with back pack and duffel bag sitting on a curb in a parking lot, pulling stuff out of a ground water drain. He stopped and pretended he hadn't been after he noticed me walking. He didn't ask me for anything, but I asked him if he wanted some money. He said that I'd be surprised how much money could be found by going through accumulations of grass, trash, etc. in the drains. I pulled out $8.00 in one dollar bills and blessed them before giving them to him. I explained to him that the number eight is a number of money and abundance before going on my way. I look for opportunities to be of assistance to others when out and about--whether financially or otherwise.
You can't afford to give money away, you say? I understand, for I have a lot of wants/needs currently, too (including automobile). However, when one most needs to receive is when one most needs to give. Keep the flow going. Every dollar helps; for that matter, every quarter helps. There is much satisfaction and joy in giving to others, in assisting others. If you haven't learned that yet, give it a try, beginning with an attitude adjustment, if needed. I'm reminded of a song that goes, "I've got that joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart, down in my heart, down in my heart. I've got that joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart, down in my heart to stay."
