Recently,
I’ve had a stronger-than-usual sense of the temporary nature of human lives and
the accoutrements humans gather around them, and that none of it is important in
the overall scheme of things. More and
more, I’m of the conviction that lovingkindness is all that really matters. The majority of human beings have determined
selves to be more important than is actually the case, thinking all existence
is about humanity, when nothing could be further from the truth. There is drama everywhere. There are wars and rumors of wars. And this little paradise of a planet is being destroyed by violations and abuse (acts which, by the
way, can have ramifications for elsewhere in the galaxy). There seems to be a huge insufficiency of lovingkindness
on this field of play.
William
Shakespeare wrote, "All the World’s a Stage, And all men [and women]
merely Players; They have their Exits and their Entrances. . . ." This isn’t home for souls living as humans.
It’s a place where all come to play, to work, to experience, etc., as human
body-mind units become available at this level of existence, before returning
to our sources, our creators (which is not to deny the existence of a primary
creator).
It is to
remain constantly aware that “this world is not my home, I’m just passing
through” (as goes an old Christian song) and do what one can to make positive
contributions in unattached ways. It is
to choose to take the higher path, to rise above, and play the living human
game lightly, practicing lovingkindness. I’m reminded of the pop song that
goes, ”Put a little love in your heart . . . and the world will be a better
place . . . for you, for me, just wait and see.”
On the front
of the refrigerator here in my earthly home base of six years, there’s a bumper
sticker (put on with magnets):
“Lovingkindness is my religion.”
If you google those words and add “bumper sticker,” you can find a place
to order your own. And while you’re waiting for it to arrive, don’t forget to
practice lovingkindness. We all need
reminders. That’s why the words are on my refrigerator.
