On February 19, 2013, I posted an article on this site
titled “Angel of Light(s)” as follows (with the second and third paragraphs
reversed for this article):
I looked up a name today for a friend in a book I've had a
long time: Gustav Davidson, “A
Dictionary of Angels--including the fallen angels” (New York: The Free Press,
1967). When taking the opportunity to glance at other pages, I saw "Angel
of Light" and "Angel of Lights" in the listings. Many uneducated and uninformed people who
call themselves Christian have criticized my name, most especially in the early
years, so I decided to share the full entries here.
Angel of Lights: In
“The Zadokite Fragments” the following appears:
“Moses and Aaron continued in their charge through the help of the Angel
of Lights even though Beliel in his cunning had set up Jannes and his brother
in opposition of them.” [Reference:
Rowley, “The Zadokite Fragments and the Dead Sea Scrolls”; Grand, “Gnosticism
and Early Christianity.”] Raphael, as
regent of the sun; Uriel, also called regent of the sun; and Shamshiel, “light
of day,” may similarly be designated angels of light.
Angel of Light:
Isaac, Gabriel, Jesus, and Satan have been called angels of light, Satan
only in his disguise as such (II Corinthians 11:14). In Jewish tradition, Isaac
was looked upon as an angel of light because of the supernatural brightness of
his countenance at birth (a birth announced by [Archangel] Michael). In
Christian lore of the Middle Ages, Gabriel was the angel of light. [Reference:
Christian, “The History and Practice of Magic I, 296.] In Parsi religion, it was Mihr (Meher,
Mithra); also Parvargigar (who, in Arabic, was Rab-un-naw, “lord of the
species”). According to “Midrash Komen,”
300 angels of light dwell in the 3rd Heaven where they “unceasingly sing God’s
praises and watch over the Garden of Eden and the Tree of Life.” It should be explained that there are two
paradises: the terrestrial one and the heavenly one. In the cabala, the sun, included among the
planets, is regarded as an angel of light. [End of February 13, 2013 Blog]
I was looking for a new name in the late 1980s, but didn’t find one that fit until I had a
romantic involvement with a cosmic man about 1990 who called me his “light
angel” and his “angel light.” Guidance
was that was my new name, just Angel-Light with no middle name and no last name. I immediately changed my name in all but the
legal sense. I wasn’t much “in the
system” anyway—no bank account or credit cards.
Finally, about ten years later, I decided to legally change my name. I
had learned that not having a last name meant business people called me Ms.
Light, so I knew I needed to choose a last name before changing my name
legally. I settled on Love. In retrospect, I sort of wish I had changed
it to Lovejoy. There are numerous people in the USA with both of these as their
last name.
Last night, it occurred to me to share an article I found many
years ago on a site focused on answering questions related to The Holy Bible,
with “353,296 Bible Questions Answered” in big letters at www.gotquestions.org. S. Michael Houdmann answered the question, "What
does it mean that Satan masquerades as an angel of light?" It is focused on 2 Corinthians 11:14 in The
New Testament. Some translations say
that Satan “disguises himself as an Angel of Light,” while others say that
Satan “masquerades as an Angel of Light.”
I seem to recall there is another similar translation, but I’m not going
to take the time to research it for this article.
Here are the first paragraphs of how S. Michael Houdmann
answered the question: “What does it
mean that Satan masquerade as an angel of light?” [Note: It is too long to include all of it as
part of this article.] Even a child
understands that darkness and light are metaphors for evil and good. If anyone
sees an angel of light, it will automatically seem to be a good being, for the
correlation of evil with darkness, and of good with light, is a powerful
archetype in human history. In the Bible, light is a spiritual metaphor for
truth and God’s unchanging nature (James 1:17). It is repeatedly used in the Bible
to help us understand that God is wholly good and truthful (1 John 1:5). When
we are “in the light,” we are with Him (1 Peter 2:9). He exhorts us to join Him
in the light (1 John 1:7), for giving us light was His purpose (John 12:46).
Light is the place where love dwells and is comfortable (1 John 2:9-10). God
has created light (Genesis 1:3), dwells in the light (1 Timothy 6:16) and puts
the light in human hearts so that we can see and know Him and understand truth
(2 Corinthians 4:6).
So, when 2 Corinthians 11:14 tells us that “Satan disguises
himself as an angel of light,” it means that Satan capitalizes on our love of
the light in order to deceive. He wants us to think that he is good, truthful,
loving, and powerful – all the things that God is. To portray himself as a
dark, devilish being with horns would not be very appealing to the majority of
people. Most people are not drawn to darkness, but to light. Therefore, Satan
appears as a creature of light to draw us to himself and his lies.
How can we discern, therefore, which light is of God and
which light is of Satan? Our minds and hearts are easily confused by
conflicting messages. How can we make sure we are on the right path? Psalm 119
says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (verse 105) and
“The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the
simple” (verse 130). The words of God have power. Just as God’s voice spoke
physical light into existence, it can speak spiritual light into our hearts.
Exposure to His voice – in His Word – will help us recognize the difference
between the good light of God and that which is counterfeit.
Angel-Light comments:
By their love you will know them. And love is both a noun and an action
verb. The agents of true Divine light are persecuted and oppressed by those who
are unable to discern.
