Esther Hicks/Abraham, January 2014: “Meditation is a powerful tool. If we were standing in your physical shoes, we would meditate on a regular basis for the sweet relief of a quiet mind.”

I agree.  Reading these words recently inspired another article about meditation.  Simply put, prayer is talking to God/Divine.  Meditation is listening to God/Divine. However, meditation can be much more, and often is much more.  I have practiced seated meditation for about 35 years now. Some days there has been no intentional meditation at all, and other days there have been meditations of an hour or two, with most days something in between.  Some days, meditation has been facilitated by relaxation music—most of which was not specifically created for purposes of lowering brain waves for meditation.  Most days, meditation has been without music.  From time to time, I’ll play the guided meditations of others, following instructions that enhance my wellbeing.  In the “old days” (1990s), I would record guided meditations on cassette tapes, duplicate them, and give them to ministry supporters. My mind has not been able to grasp how to create recordings and duplicate them using “newfangled” methods.  Sigh!

For my health and wellbeing, quality and quantity meditation time is necessary. All aspects of the life suffer to some degree when it is lacking. It is during such quiet times that equilibrium is restored and the still, small voice of the Divine can penetrate and reach its destination clearly.

The first step to entering meditative consciousness is to focus on the breath. Begin by taking a few slow, deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Then close the mouth and breathe in and out through the nose—slowly, deeply. After a while, during several slow, deep breaths, say silently to yourself, "Quiet mind"--"quiet" on the in-breath and "mind" on the out-breath. After a few more deep breaths, begin saying silently to yourself, "At ease"--"at" on the in-breath and "ease" on the out-breath. After a few more deep breaths, say silently to yourself, "Re-lax"--"re" on the in-breath and "lax" on the out-breath. Beginning is as simple as that.

If one wants to quietly meditate after a long absence from so doing and can't seem to get into it, then it is not to be concerned, but just to keep on doing the preparation for meditation, such as putting on some soothing instrumental music, getting comfortable, deep breathing, etc., once or so a day, maybe twice on weekends. No big deal. At some point, one finds one’s self easing into quiet meditation. During quiet meditation, if the mind begins to get noisy, one can take a few more deep breaths while repeating silently, "quiet mind, peace be still," in rhythm with the breath, just accepting and moving on.

Active meditation is easier, of course. I start with the first step paragraph above, and then begin communicating with myself silently, gently, guiding myself into deeper states of relaxation, with such phrases as "With every breath I take, I am becoming more and more relaxed, more and more relaxed.” Sometimes I'll even count down from ten to one, and make short statements silently in between numbers, such as "quiet mind." After I feel sufficiently relaxed, I open my heart and repeat silently over and over, “Thank you”—thank on the inbreath and you on the outbreath. I give myself positive messages while breathing slowly, including: “Miracles abound.”  And, in rhythm with breaths, “Loving (on inbreath) kindness (on outbreath), compassion (on inbreath) service (on outbreath), no harm (on inbreath) living (on outbreath).”   And, “Healing (on inbreath) now (on outbreath), now (on inbreath) healing (on outbreath).” Here’s another: “Free and clear” (over one full breath), safe and sound (over one full breath.”

To lessen confusion, here they are without interruption, separated by semicolons:  loving-kindness, compassion, service, no-harm living; free and clear, safe and sound; miracles abound; quiet mind, peace be still; relax; at ease; quiet mind.  The reader can probably think of more (and I probably will after I post this article).

If you haven’t practiced meditation heretofore, ease into meditation and enjoy the benefits.  Over time, going into deeper levels of consciousness for meditation will become easier.
