Larry Dossey, M.D.’s “Healing Words: The Power of Prayer and the Practice of Medicine” was published in 1993, but I’m just now reading and studying it 30 years later.  I would like to recommend it here before adding my personal thoughts.  

First, some background, there are over a dozen of Larry Dossey’s books available, including “Be Careful What You Pray For—you just might get it” (1997), which we strongly recommended on the ♥Angel-Light Beamer♥ in a 2014 article.  Others include “Recovering the Soul” and “Space, Time & Medicine.”

You may or may not have come across Dr. Dossey’s books before, but I consider them all worth a read. You might recognize names of some of the well-known people who recommend “Healing Words.”  I did.  Dean Ornish, M.D. wrote:  “The most thoughtful, eloquent, and interesting book on prayer, health, and healing that I have ever read.”  Bernie Siegel, M.D. reports that “Healing Words” “Explores a subject that has for too long been overlooked by much of science and medicine. I recommend it to everyone.”

“Healing Words,” which I don’t consider a religious book, covers a lot, even gives instructions on how to pray.  I’ll share the contents here. Part One, “Understanding Prayer and Healing, has two chapters:  Saints and Sinners, Health and Illness,” and “The Reach of the Mind: Setting the Stage for Prayer.” In Part Two, “Factors Influencing the Efficacy of Prayer,” we find nine sections:  “Prayer and the Unconscious Mind”; “Where Do Prayers Go?”; “How to Pray and What to Pray For”; “Love and Healing”; “Time-Displaced Prayer: When Prayers Are Answered Before They Are Made”; “Your Doctor’s Beliefs and Why They Matter”; “When Prayer Hurts: An Inquiry into Black [aka Negative] Prayer.”  Part Three, “The Evidence,” covers the last of the main text in three sections:  “God in the Laboratory”; “Prayer and Healing: Reviewing the Research”; and “What Is Healing?”

There are four appendices on pages 211 through 253, which include case studies and charts: (1) “Controlled Experimental Trials of Healing,” (2) “Spontaneous Regression of Cancer,” (3) ”How Good Is the Evidence? Prayer, Meditation, and Parapsychology,” (4) “Healing and the Mind: Summing Up.” There are numerous references and also notes. 

On Page 79, there begins a sub-section titled: “Prayer Without Consent: Ethical Issues,” and I’d like to include some of Dr. Dossey’s words here:  “Serious questions arise in the wake of the above experiments, which seem clearly to show that mental activity can be used to influence people nonlocally, at a distance, without their knowledge.  As we shall see, scores of experiments on prayer show that it also can be used to great effect without the subjects’ awareness. The question arises, however, about whether it is ethical to use these techniques if recipients are unaware that they are being employed. The question becomes even more urgent when we see in Chapter 9 that prayer can be used at a distance to harm people without their knowledge.” Dr. Dossey considers this subject further in the subsection.

Personally, when I elect to pray for someone who hasn’t asked (and often even when they have asked on social media), I ask in the name of the Christ [although in the name of the Light can be used, if preferred] for “a most benevolent outcome for the wellbeing” of the person and/or, in some cases, “the optimizing of the person’s wellbeing.”  I end the short prayer with “throughout creation—now.”   I don’t know a Soul’s Plan (the Divine Plan) for an individual’s life (specifics).  Far be it from me to assume that I do. I welcome prayers for my own self when another person is so guided—as long as they follow this all-encompassing recommendation.

Recently "downloaded" the following simple guidance for someone and will share it here: "Get knowledge. Never stop studying and learning--especially about those with whom you disagree. Out of knowledge comes wisdom and the ability to make wise decisions. Know. Know. Know. What is belief but lack of knowledge? Blind faith will serve you little. Knowledge will serve you well. Above all, know yourself."

Since we "jumped off the cliff and began to fly" back in 1990, guidance for many people has been transmitted . Our multidimensional soul self has also coached and taught those seeking guidance and input. Then there's that current level, current time knowledge gained (this lifetime) that can be useful to others, too. I have been told several times over the years that I should be writing books about my experiences. Oh, well! Anything I could write, another "lightworker" has probably already written. The stories I could tell!

For example, once I was staying over after a gathering of freedom-lovers had ended and found myself chatting with a senior citizen who had extreme knee pain and could not walk without leaning onto her husband as she came from their car into the house. When we are offering assistance to someone, we try to speak in words they will relate to and accept. I asked the woman, "Would you like me to lay hands on your knee?" She said, "Yes." So I held my hand close to her knee, without touching, as we chatted about unrelated matters. When her husband was ready to leave, she got up easily from the sofa (which surprised her greatly) and walked by herself to the car. Our instrument served as a channel of Healing Love Energy for this woman. If her body, in its higher wisdom, had decided that the energy coming in was needed more in another part of her body (perhaps for some hidden dis-ease), we would have not seen such dramatic results.

In the 1990s, at a time when we were without a lightmobile (automobile), I was on a city bus transporting numerous people when I noticed that the driver was nodding as if he was falling asleep, and the bus was going far too fast.  Some other passengers had noticed and began to get looks of alarm on their faces. We consciously and intentionally, from my position directly behind the driver, directed energy to him. When he became more alert and the bus slowed down, we stopped. As I began to depart the bus, the driver said to me: "Thank you." Somehow, he knew who the energy was coming through.

Another bus story: Once when I was sitting on a city bus on a seat that faced another seat, I began to feel a strong energy flowing through me without my intending it. That wasn't the first time it had happened, so I was not surprised. I just wondered who it was going to. As I got off my seat to depart the bus, a man sitting across from me reached out to try to stop me. He was so embarrassed and withdrew his hand quickly. It was then that I knew who had been getting the energy.

There are times when I experience what is termed an "overlay" of a being of very high vibration, usually an angel. When that happens, I feel myself begin to tingle and glow. One year, I traded volunteering at a 3-day conference for full tuition. I was only required to work one-half day, and was assigned to the table where the tapes and books of the MC and musicians were being sold. As it turned out, I found I was benefiting more and doing more good by being at that table instead of in the conference room, and I only left the table for one session or to take care of my body's needs. The light energy flowing into/from/through my body became quite strong, and there was so much that it felt almost like I was on fire. So many people came up to that table to talk and ask for hugs, some more than once. I was told later that over 300 people had registered. Seemed to me that two-thirds of them had been to that table! After the conference ended, the light energy began to dissipate gradually. However, a couple of days after the conference, I went to a quickie place that I had been to before to give my car an oil change. When one of the employees walked out to greet me, he turned around and began talking to me with his back to me. Why? Because the light energy was too much for the darkness that was in him. The manager of the facility then came out and was able to face me, but I noticed he was a little uncomfortable with the light.

This is not to say that the light within our person is always that strong, or that such a powerful light being is always present. No, quite the contrary! It is the exception rather than the rule--for many reasons.
