Recently read an interesting article in the Dallas Morning News by Sam Wang and Sandra Aamodt, co-authors of the book, Welcome To Your Brain: Why You Lose Your Car Keys But Never Forget How to Drive and Other Puzzles of Everyday Life. In the article, "A Twist in the Nature vs. Nurture Debate," they explain how much genes dictate fate. Would you believe about 25% of the variation in people's life experiences can be traced to genetic origins (and dozens of studies support this)? One-fourth!
Animals (which include humans) actively seek environments that are compatible with their genetic predispositions. It's known that personality depends on genes. Some of the effects of what is called genetics/nature are the direct result of people being drawn to particular environments because of their personalities. People with similar personalities look for similar experiences and may take similar risks. Genetic predispositions interact with circumstances to produce unique individuals.
Wang and Aamodt summarize: ". . . you may wonder if your genes are ultimately to blame for your fortunes, good or ill. That's hardly the case. Only one-fourth of the variation in life events is heritable, which means three-fourths is not. So you have plenty of opportunity to influence your circumstances. . . ."
Nevertheless, this is something that can give one who is of the firm conviction that he is the "master of his fate" and the "captain of his soul" reason to rethink that position. Food for thought.
