In my opinion, the best medicine for ones
who don’t feel the Divine presence within is to spend time in nature. In the inner
city, where there is sometimes little of nature to appreciate, one can look for
a patch of grass and weeds or a single tree or bush. There are benefits to
leaning your back against even a small tree and rubbing against the tree when
you can, and there are benefits to gently touching leaves and stems of bushes and
trees and touching them against your face.
If you can stand or walk barefoot on green grass, more the better. It is
to do the most you can to commune with nature with what you have of nature that
is accessible. When communing with nature outdoors isn’t possible (and even
when it is), green houseplants are beneficial. If you love them, talk sweetly
to them, and caress them gently, they’ll thrive (assuming they are given
sufficient light—and some require more than others).
I found several quotes about communing with
Divine on www.squidoo.com.
Martin Luther (founder of the Protestant
movement): “God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees and
flowers and clouds and stars.”
Mother Teresa: “We need to find God, and he cannot be found
in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature -
trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun,
how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls.”
George Washington Carver (horticulturist): “I
love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God
speaks to us every hour, if we only will tune in.” And: “Reading about nature is fine, but if a person
walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in
books, for they speak with the voice of God.”
Epictetus (ancient Greek sage and Stoic
philosopher): “To
pay homage to beauty is to admire Nature; to admire Nature is to worship God.”
Henry
David Thoreau (Naturalist): “My profession is to always find God in nature.”
John
Muir (Naturalist): “I only went out for a
walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found,
was really going in.”
Anne Frank (who died at the hands of Nazis):
“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside,
somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God.
Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes
to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. As long as this
exists, and it certainly always will, I know that then there will always be
comfort for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances may be. And I firmly
believe that nature brings solace in all troubles."
Open up your heart and let the sunshine in. Consciously and intentionally commune with nature on a regular basis, and you will begin noticing the Divine Presence within and experience Divine Presence more fully over time.
