Recently, I heard or
read the word “invoke” used in a way with which I wasn’t familiar. And that led me to go to the dictionary to
investigate. Learned something. I suspect that here in the USA, most people
are familiar with the use of the word “invoke” “to call forth by incantation:
conjure,” which leads religious people to stay clear of its use. However, Definition #1 in my Merriam Webster
dictionary is “to petition for help or support” and #2 is “to appeal to or cite
as authority.” It’s #3 where the
“conjure” definition is listed.
Definition #4 begins definitions with which I wasn’t familiar: #4 “to
make an earnest request for: solicit”; #5 “to put into effect or operation:
implement”; #6 “to bring about: cause.” Definitions #4, #5, and #6 make the word
“invoke” seem very powerful and authoritative.
I confess to practicing using the word as meant in these last three
definitions after putting away the dictionary.
Let’s go back to the
first two definitions. I’ve invoked
(appealed, petitioned) authorities for help and support many times. Some of the
authority or authorities to be invoked are: “my Divine” and/or “my Council of
Light/Elders” and/or “the Angels of Grace and Mercy” and/or “the Army of the
Lord Christ.” (There are many more
choices, of course.) I preface my prayer
requests with “in the name of the Christ,” but some people prefer to use “in
the name of the Light” or “in the name of the true Divine Light.” And then I sometimes use the word “invoke”;
sometimes I “ask for.” There are a variety
of words I use when praying.
Moving on, the
definition of “intercession” is “a prayer, petition, or entreaty in favor of
another.” The definition of “intercede”
is “to act or interpose on behalf of someone in difficulty or trouble, as by
pleading or petition” and “to attempt to reconcile differences between two
people or groups; mediate.” The
definition of “intervene” is “to come between so as to prevent or alter a
result or course of events.” I’ve written about “intercessory” prayers several
times in articles posted on the ♥Angel-Light Beamer♥, including information on “imprecatory” prayers (the latter being
prayers for harm to be done rather than prayers for help and positive
intervention).
Intervention. This
is a good place to differentiate between the words “intervention” and
“interference.” Generally, to intervene
is considered positive and to interfere is considered negative. However, the
dictionary definitions of the words are quite similar. To intervene is “to come
between so as to prevent or alter a result or course of events.” Intervention is the act of intervening. Some
synonyms are: intercede, get involved, mediate, referee. In fact, “interfere”
is listed as one of the synonyms of “intervene.” Here are some dictionary definitions of
“interfere”: “to prevent (a process or activity) from continuing or being
carried out properly” and “take part or intervene in an activity without
invitation or necessity.” Some of the
synonyms of the word “interfere” are:
impede, obstruct, stand in the way of, hinder, inhibit, restrict,
constrain, hamper. Yes, the word “interfere”
can be used positively; however, its synonyms indicate it is most often used
with a negative connotation.
Just food for
thought.
