Someone in a public forum was having little or no success with learning to meditate, mentioning a busy mind, etc.  Here is my response.

Might be helpful to back up and not focus on meditation until you become familiar with some other practices, such as breath practices, for starters, CONTROL AND CLEAR THOUGHTS: Close the left nostril with you finger and inhale through the right nostril. Hold for a count of 8 and then exhale through the same (right) nostril. Then close your right nostril with your finger and inhale through the left nostril. Hold for the count of 8 and then exhale through the same (left) nostril. Repeat as many times and on as many occasions as you feel necessary.

Here's another breath practice, CALMING & GROUNDING: Exhale to the count of 6. Hold to the count of 6. Inhale to the count of 4. Do not hold, but begin exhaling to the count of 6 immediately.

Programming the mind can be helpful. In this case, instruct yourself silently with these groups of words: "At-Ease" and "Re-lax" and "Quiet-Mind." One word or syllable on the inhale, the second word or syllable when exhaling.

After you have mastered the others and noticed a quieter mind, more at peace, practice the: NOTHINGNESS BREATH: Open your mouth slightly. Press gently and smoothly inward on your abdomen with your palms. Breathe out during a count to 6. Hold for a count of 2. Release smoothly and breathe in during a count to 6. Hold for a count of 2. Repeat this whole process 3 times. Drop your arms to your sides, and close your eyes if they are not already closed. Let go of everything and enjoy the state of “nothingness” for about 5 minutes or the time that feels right for you. Note:  Don’t do the mind programming during the Nothingness Breath.
