There’s a Facebook page titled “Paramhansa Yogananda” that I follow, and there are one or two other pages (in English) on Facebook as well. Some people use the spelling “Paramahansa Yogananda,” which is what I’m in the habit of using. Today a post from the page I follow showed up in my FB feed that quoted Yogananda speaking or writing about Babaji.

Here’s what Wikipedia’s article on Babaji opens with  (better than I could word it):  Mahavatar Babaji is the name given to his guru by Indian Yogi Yogiraj Lahiri Mahasaya (1828–1895), and several of his disciples, who reportedly appeared to them between 1861 and 1985, as described in various publications and biographies. [Sri Yukteswar was a disciple of Lahiri Mahasava, and Paramahansa Yogananda was a disciple of Sri Yukteswar.]  According to Yogananda's autobiography, Babaji has resided for at least hundreds of years in the remote Himalayan regions of India, seen in person by only a small number of disciples and others.

For those who don’t know, here’s part of Wikipedia’s introduction about Yogananda: A chief disciple of the yoga guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar, he was sent by his lineage to spread the teachings of yoga to the West. He immigrated to America at the age of 27 to prove the unity between Eastern and Western religions and to preach a balance between Western material growth and Indian spirituality He lived his last 32 years in America.

I first “met” Yogananda in this life at a yard/rummage/garage sale in the 1980s I had gravitated toward the yards of books offered. Yogananda’s classic, best-selling book, “Autobiography of a Yogi,” was the first (or one of the first) books I chose to pick up—a hard back with no paper cover.  When I opened it, there was an image of Yogananda whose eyes seemed to be staring into mine.  I gasped and said under my breath, “I know him!” I still remember the experience, almost forty years later. And, I still have the big, thick book. It covers a lot of territory, including time spent and spiritual-type discussions with well-known/regarded people in the U.S., including Luther Burbank. In other words, it’s not just a spiritual book, although I was intrigued and comfortable that Yogananda writes a lot about Christ Consciousness in his autobiography and in later writings and presentations to groups.

After seeing the post from the Facebook page I follow,  I thought about writing a blog about spending time with Babaji in a Himalayan cave (in another life), but had decided against it.  A minute or two later, there was a sponsored (ad) of a restaurant in my Facebook feed that included the words:  “Join us as we celebrate the vibrant culture of the Himalayas through culinary delights and soul-stirring music.”  I laughed and changed my mind about writing this blog. That was definitely a message to proceed!

So, here’s the experience, a soul memory: I was sitting in a group of people in a cave, waiting for a leader to direct us, when someone entered the cave.  I said aloud (and I wasn’t the only one) with surprise, “Babaji”!  What an honor to experience his presence!  [Wow!  Powerful Divine tingles came over me as I wrote this paragraph. I prefer “Divine tingles” description rather than “God chills,” which is what some people call them. When this happens, they are almost always a confirmation and validation.]  I have other memories of the Himalayas, soul memories, which I won’t describe here.

Still feeling the high vibration of that experience as I prepare to end this blog. How wonderful!

For a long time after reading “Autobiography of a Yogi,” I actually didn’t like Sri Yukteswar—because how gruff and rough he seemed when teaching Paramahansa Yogananda.  Then one day I decided that since Yogananda dearly loved him, I would love him, too. And, I began to understand that some people learn differently than other people. What is interesting is that in this life I experienced in person a Yogi from India who had been a student of Yogi Lahiri Mahasaya who, as I understand it, had been Sri Yukteswar’s guru.  I had arrived early to a presentation and was sitting in the back of the room. Hariharananda Giri, Indian guru, (May 27,1907 – December 3, 2002) came in and seated himself on the stage.  Our eyes met across the room.  I knew him, and he knew me. That was all.

I could continue writing on this subject, but I won’t.  This lifetime, my soul path has not been one of following yogis.
