The labels “angels” and “guides” are commonly used interchangeably in conversations and literature in the holistic community here in the U.S.A. Back in the early 1980s, when some ones at a holistic center asked what the names of my guides were, I had to respond that I didn’t know, because I’d never asked. So, shortly after that I went into an altered state of consciousness and asked them to show themselves and give me their names, which they did, from an overtone of this dimension. They were definitely not angels—probably hyperdimensional or extradimensional or interdimensional beings. Actually, these “guides” might be what is called “handlers,” although I don’t remember negativity coming from them in all our interactions over the years.
Whenever I’ve seen the term “handlers” in cosmic, occult, etc. literature, it is used to describe beings who are supervising and directing and managing and even manipulating and controlling the lives of souls and their humans. Obviously, handlers are not what are usually called “guides.” Using the dictionary and thesaurus, guides are wayshowers and advisors and directors, which is definitely a much more gentle definition.
Why would some people have handlers instead of guides? The incarnated souls could be on this plane of existence as galactic warriors. The souls could have been given more difficult assignments, possibly serving as agents of the liberation forces on behalf of this planetary sphere. The oversouls could have set challenging goals for these extensions of themselves where more direct supervision is needed.
Personally, I feel oneness with a group of angelics, what I call a collective. It was after I recognized and acknowledged my collective that I came across words of Clive Shane Herrington in “Self-Healing Handbook: The Advanced Handbook of Soul Transformation”: "A soul collective is a team of beings that together have a specific mission. As part of their mission, they all have different skills and qualities that are needed at particular times. In this regard, they can consciously exchange. They use one human vehicle as a focal point within this reality, with the one being more suited to mission requirements at a particular time occupying the body."
Although not specific to the title of this article, I want to include the August 1999 words of Esther Hicks/Abraham: "Abraham is not a singular consciousness as you feel that you are in singular bodies. Abraham is a collective consciousness. There is a stream or river of consciousness. As one of you asks a question, there are many, many points of consciousness that are funneling through what feels to be one perspective (because there is, in this case, one human, Esther, who is interpreting or articulating it), so it appears singular to you. We are multidimensional and multi-faceted, and, certainly, multi-consciousness." [I often use the pronoun "we" instead of "I" in conversation.]
Angels have been described as guardians, protectors, supervisors, emissaries, agents (of the Heavenly realm). An “angelic human,” according to some New Age teachers, is a person who has been “awakened” to his or her “divine nature” and true “mission” on earth. Angelic humans, sometimes called “earth angels” or “Homo Angelus,” listen to divine messages within their hearts and act on those messages. According to this teaching, humanity is in a process of spiritual evolution as more and more angelic humans realize their place in the cosmos and their duty to enlighten mankind. When enough angelic humans have been awakened to who they really are and the world is full of their acts of goodness and love, the world will enter a new era of peace and goodness. Humanity will finally become one with the Divine Consciousness.

Some New Age teachers think that angelic humans have invisible wings that can be felt with the psyche and used to perform powerful works. Externally, angelic humans look like “normal” humans, but they differ emotionally, psychologically, and, of course, spiritually. They are angelic spirits who are indwelling human bodies." (The article goes on to dispute these words based on The Holy Bible).
Another perspective is that angels overlight aka overlay and even merge with and work through their human instruments to assist humanity—sometimes briefly and often for more lengthy periods of time. Who hasn’t read or heard of ordinary humans given extraordinary strength to lift an automobile or heavy equipment off and away from another human, saving that individual’s life? Who hasn’t read of a person being stranded in a remote location with a disabled automobile and experiencing one or more beings appear “out of nowhere” and take care of business before disappearing back to where they came? And, then there are young children who see human persons as angels with wings. I experienced that during the traveling angel years. [Some say that it’s the bright light the children see, combined with the auric field of the human, rather than actual wings.]
I read a story once where a woman reported that when she was a little girl and riding her bicycle too fast downhill, and seemed headed for a collision with a wall or fence, an angel with wings stepped in to prevent the collision—albeit with a look of disapproval on its face--and then disappeared into “thin air.” However, the angel was slightly gray, and there was no bright light.
Whether angels, guides, or handlers, or something else entirely, the most important consideration is whether or not these beings are aligned with one’s wellbeing.
